The Five Points of a New Architecture:
- PILOTIS: to lift the house off the ground.
- THE FREE PLAN: the framed construction of the building allowing the interior space to be organized as desired.
- THE FREE FACADE: since the external walls were not load-bearing, they could be divided up wherever necessary by windows and other apertures.
- THE RIBBON WINDOW: a long horizontal window.
- THE ROOF GARDEN: intended to replace the ground covered by the house and bring its inhabitants into a direct relationship with nature.

"Lo popular trasciende la rigidez que los arquitectos aprenden en la escuela, donde siempre hay que dar una justificación para cualquier cosa que se haga. En lo popular no se precisa una razón, sólo la pura emoción. ¿Porqué ciertas ventanas tienen unas dimensiones determinadas y no otras? Muy sencillo, porque a la gente le gustan que sean así.
Para mí, un espacio o un edificio tienen que tener una razón emocional para existir. Yo llamo a esto una filosofía. Tienen que significar algo. No basta con decir, 'esta habitación va a ser muy hermosa'; de lo que se trata es de que la habitación, casa o edificio, tengan una filosofía...
Pero mi planteamiento fundamental es: '¿Qué es lo que quiero hacer con este proyecto?' Antes de empezar a proyectar, hay que digerir o dejar que la idea del proyecto vaya evolucionando en el interior de uno. Nunca me pongo a proyectar antes de que esto suceda.
[...la luz, los planos, la proporción y el color...] son únicamente herramientas de mi arquitectura, antes que objetivos últimos, y dan vueltas en mi mente de un lado a otro: los evoco para resolver un problema concreto de proyecto. Es una especie de lenguaje o, mejor dicho, de vocabulario, aunque la gente los interpreta como un lenguaje. La gente suele decir, 'Bueno, si está estucado y en color, entonces tiene el estilo de Legorreta.' En ocasiones, esta generalización me resulta algo molesta. Uso los materiales nativos y el color porque me gustan, pero la intención última va más allá del mero hecho de decir, 'usa color en un muro'."
